What is RSS?

RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary), is an XML data structuring format that provides automatic access to information published on an Internet site. This system of distributing contents is known as syndication. Its function is to display a summary or index of the contents published on a site without having to access the said site. An RSS reader (programme that enables users to read RSS feeds, also known as feed readers) or a browser that features one of these readers will enable you to obtain news from one or several sites without having to visit them.
There are also other contents syndication formats, such as Atom, RDF, etc.

What is a feed?
A feed is a file that includes data that is shared over an RSS channel. They usually use .rss,.rdf or .xml extensions.
They are small XML text files stored in the servers of the contents feeder sites. In these files, editors include an organised and structured list of headlines and a short description of the contents that have been published and that they consider of interest. The most advanced versions may also include images or attached documents.
By adding feeds from you favourite sites to a programme capable of reading them (an RSS reader), you will be permanently notified of any novelties without constantly having to visit the sites.

An RSS channel is a link (through which information flows) between our computer and the contents feeder server of the site we are using. It is often used as a synonym of RSS feed.
How can I read a feed?
The programmes used to read feeds are called feeders or feed aggregators and the process of adding a feed is known as aggregating or syndicating.
There are many free readers/aggregators on the net. Some of the most popular are FeedReader,AwasuRssReader… There are also web sites where you can configure your RSS readers (BloglinesGoogle Reader …). The Firefox and Opera browsers, the Thunderbird e-mail client, and an ever growing number of programmes now come with built-in RSS readers.

I want to syndicate a feed
